CLUB REVIEW & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Secretary’s Report following the meeting of 16 August 2011

Tonight, our very special guest was a very tired looking Dr Felix Chan from Liverpool Hospital. Its little wonder the good Doctor would be feeing this way as he is the only surgeon in the whole South West Area Health Service Region that performs surgery on women with Gynaecological cancers. Dr Chan is obviously a very dedicated surgeon as in his own words said, “I could retire today and be happy, but the fact I am the only person in this greater region doing surgery on women afflicted with these conditions dictates that I must keep going”. Our other guest speaker, Noelene Newton from Liverpool LINK,  who got her dates mixed up and turned up tonight for her presentation instead of last week was so moved by Dr Chan’s plight that she turned to me and said, “Forget about the money I asked for, give it all to him”. Well Noelene, it doesn’t work that way. Our club will look at each and every request from those organisations in our community that are in need and act appropriately. Noelene’s request for funds to run this and next year’s Oz Tag competition, a competition our club funded in its inaugural year and The Dr’s request for funding for an operating chair will be looked at closely by our club. Hopefully we will be able to help both.

Our new board held its first meeting at Shann O’Connell’s place in Wallacia Monday 15th August. Our president elect proved that not only is she a dedicated Rotarian, but a fine host and chef in the kitchen as well.  Any one invited to Shann’s for dinner should really think twice before declining her offer.  Our president, Ted Mlynarz, advised that he had received notification from Andrew Xu, a student wishing to attend this year’s National Youth Science Forum. Our club has agreed to donate $1500 towards costs and that Andrew also attend at least 2 farmers market BBQ’s, a request our club has insisted benefactors in these instances reward us with for our generosity. Remainder of costs will have to be borne by Andrew and his family.  Ted also advised that a number of out of state people had shown an interest in joining our club. Ted will be investigating the legality and possibilities of this happening.

Joe Cauchi, aka International Man of Mystery, proposed a small team to travel to Tanzania to see firsthand status of Heidi School and to gauge future help needed.  He also recommended the issue of food parcels in much the same way as carried out by visiting Rotarians in Vietnam. PP Peter Beadle and Jim Leahy have expressed interest in this project and would also like to visit the school in Tanzania. Our club members certainly don’t mind getting their hands dirty when it comes to involvement in projects both here or abroad. Jim has also approached Fairfield High School asking that they adopt The Catholic Secondary School in Mwamapala as their sister school.  Students at Fairfield High have shown great interest in our club’s activities and it will be interesting to see what Jim and Peter can foster in this area.

In a late development, I have received a call from Fairfield High School Principal Mr. Bob Mulas. He has advised that he will recommend his school become a sister school of the Tanzanian one. He has apparently been toying with the idea and this opportunity has come at the right time. He also has a whole container load of desks and other equipment he wishes to donate to them as long as our club picks up the cost of transporting it there.

Other directors have reported that all upcoming projects such as RYPEN, Pride in Workmanship, and Police Officer of The Year are all on track.

Next week we are at The Bach Dang Restaurant for our combined meeting with our satellite club, topic being the VVP trip to Vietnam and Laos 2011. While on the subject of the satellite club, you will recall that President Ted made mention in his maiden speech his desire to have the satellite club chartered on the same day our club celebrates its 40th Anniversary on Thurs 28 June 2012.  This can only happen if the satellite club meets certain criteria. The satellite club must start discussing Rotary based material at its meetings whilst also striving to increase membership and participation. I propose that minutes of our club’s Tues meetings be discussed at the satellite clubs following Tues meetings in an endeavour to align them with our own “Rotary Schedule”. This will prepare them for life without us. Members of Liverpool West Rotary club are encouraged to attend their meetings and ensure that this happens. At the moment the same Rotarians attend week in, week out. It would be great for those of you with spare time to also attend and bring your own thoughts to the table. The satellite club meets every Tuesday lunch at The Bar Luck Restaurant, John St Cabramatta at 1pm.

Regards

Charlie

JOKES

Advice to a mature guy...

A mature guy was working-out in the gym when he spotted a sweet young thing...

He asked the trainer that was near-by, "What machine in here should I use to impress that sweet thing over there?"

The female trainer looked him up and down and said, "I would try the ATM in the lobby."

JUST IN CASE YOU'RE PLANNING TO DO A LITTLE COOKING...
