Vale

On 11 Oct we learnt of the passing of Jan Still’s Mother at age 99. Our thoughts and condolences are with Jan and honorary member Les at this time. Shortly prior we also learnt of the passing of member John Pillay’s uncle and Joy Gibbs’ sister Faye and we spare thoughts of comfort to all.

Get Well Soon

Pat & June Murray returned from a wonderful trip abroad for June to be admitted to hospital with a bacterial infection of the aorta valve. We learnt on 11 October that June was admitted on about 1 October and has been treated as critical with the infection now settling and June is able to currently have visitors but remains in distress as does Pat with June currently set to have an operation to replaced the valve in coming weeks. Pat has asked for not too many members to ring with enquiries and for representatives of Rotary and Inner Wheel to make visits and enquiries. Our thoughts are then very much with both June and Pat at this time.

Polio Update – Calendar year to 24 August 2011

As reported by D9690 Rotary Foundation Chairman Warwick Tester, in the 2011/2012 Rotary Foundation Newsletter No. 1;

At 24th August, there is still only one recorded case of polio in India – and that was on January 13th. What a great feeling to know that one of those four endemic countries may soon be removed from the list. While progress is still being made in the endemic countries, problems are continuing to crop up in areas previously declared polio-free.

Chad and the Democratic Republic of Congo are two such countries where their combined cases have increased numbers by 154 against the same period last year.

On the credit side, Tajikistan looks like it’s clear again and Afghanistan and Nigeria are holding steady with just 38 cases between them year to date. There should be good news from those two countries within a year or so and then it will be down to one. The key to stopping the spread is clearing polio from those four endemic nations and once that’s done the job will be all but done. Total cases so far this year amount to 333 versus 618 at the same time last year.

Chamber Parliament Tour – a great night

A few of our members as did members from other Rotary Clubs joined The Liverpool and Ingleburn Chamber of Commerce members for a tor of Parliament House on Wednesday 12 October. For $60.00 per head we travelled to and from by coach, received a tour of Parliament house, observed the house in action, dined in the strangers dining room received and address and presentation from our hosts Melanie Gibbons, MLA, Member for Menai, Mr Bryan Doyle, MBA, Member for Campbelltown and The Hon Matthew Mason-Cox, MLC, Parliamentary Secretary and we engaged in question time with each. We were also visited by Dr Andrew McDonald, Member for Macquarie Fields. We can report the food and beverage was excellent as was the service, the tour was first class and very enjoyable and our hosts and speaker were most engaging. An informative and fun night was had by all and we thank our very kind hosts and the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce for their kind invitation and look forward to another such occasion.

A little about the Parliament of New South Wales

The Parliament of New South Wales - being Australia's first and oldest Parliament - is a site of heritage significance. The oldest surviving building in the Sydney CBD is included in the complex.

Parliament House is home to a magnificent art collection, some of it acquired through gifts and loans, and some of it purchased from time to time.

Displays of materials from the Parliamentary Collection are mounted frequently and the Fountain Court area is used to display community-based art works.

The building consists of 12 stories and an exit on the 9th floor takes you onto a lovely grassed roof area with well maintained gardens and a secluded BBQ area.

The Parliamentary Library (established in 1840) has a collection of historic books and Parliamentary Archives. The New South Wales parliament is the only State parliament with an Archives Section.

THREE CULTURAL MARRIAGE EXPERIENCES COMPARED

Three friends married women from different parts of the world.......

The first man married a Greek girl. He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.

The second man married a Thai. He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table.

The third man married a girl from Australia. He ordered her to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything either but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some difficulty when he pees

HEALTH MESSAGE…?  (PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK!)

As I was lying in bed pondering the problems of the world, I rapidly realized that I don't really give a rat's ...

It's the tortoise life for me!

1.  If walking/cycling is good for your health, the postman would be immortal.

2.  A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, and is fat.

3.  A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years.

4.  A tortoise doesn't run and does nothing, yet it lives for 450 years.

And you tell me to exercise??  I don't think so.

I'm retired.  Go around me!
