As a nation, Australia prides itself on its willingness to help other disadvantaged people locally and abroad. As a refugee accepted by the Australian Government to settle in Australia I owe my gratitude and thanks to the Australian people. I am able to rebuild my life because of the Australian people. I am one of the fortunate ones. I am proud to be part of this great nation of ours.

On the other hand, I still have ties to the country I was born in, Cambodia. I cannot fold my arms and watch those less fortunate, blind and struggle to get food on the table for their families. I could be one of them if I was still there.

Cambodia Vision acknowledges one’s difficulty of being blind and the struggle to continue to support one’s family. Cambodia Vision is very fortunate to have the support of the experienced and dedicated Australian medical professionals in the team. The service provided is free of charge to eligible patients who would otherwise have no means to have their eyesight corrected.

In 2010, work was carried out in Kampot Province, southern part of Cambodia. A total of 815 people were assessed and 220 people were successfully provided with cataract operations. People who turned up at the hospital ranged from over one month old to 92 years old.

By correcting their eyesight, Cambodia Vision contributes in a small way to minimise the family’s poverty by freeing the patient to look after him/herself and freeing the care taker to earn income to support the family.

It is with pride and hope for the future that I commend this report to you and I wish to thank the Australian Embassy in Cambodia and Cambodian Government for their support. I thank all the volunteers from Australia, Cambodia and China; the sponsors and donors for their dedication, contribution, and support in making this project another success.
