2011 saw the realization of a dream to expand the scope of charity work of VVP. For the first time, free dental treatments were provided for the poor. This dental program ran concurrently with the cataract surgery program and attracted a different set of volunteers into VVP – dentists and dental assistants.
A selected team of 52 volunteers work in partnership with the Sponsoring Association for Poor Patients HCMC (SAPP), the HCMC Eye Hospital and HCMC Dental Association.
This was the ninth trip and VVP had a target of 400 cataract operations and 200 dental cases in Ben Tre, Tra Vinh and rural provinces surrounding HCMC of Southern VN. The results for the trip were 630 cataract operations and over 500 dental procedures.

Paul Harris Fellows Dr Juliana Chong and Dr David Worsnop |
‘A highlight during this trip was the awarding of Rotary’s highest achievement award, the Paul Harris Fellow, to members of the Vietnam Vision team. The Paul Harris Fellow is named after the founder of the Rotary organisation and was established in 1905 to express appreciation for contributions to humanitarian and educational programs which invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding.
As the Club President for 2011/12, it was a privilege to be able to present the awards to two outstanding VVP members, Dr Juliana Chong and Dr David Worsnop. Both have been tireless in their contributions and dedication toward the work of Vietnam Vision and are also involved in other charity work and organisations’. |
