Our meeting on the 8 September 2009 saw the return of our three Vietnam (VVP) vets. All were in good spirits and may I say, sporting slight tans, which left everyone wondering if in fact any work at all was carried out by them in Vietnam and Cambodia. Those fears were quickly allayed when a short presentation of their activities was presented to the twenty members that were in attendance last night. In short, it was an arduous fourteen days punctuated by fun times and fellowship. I strongly recommend other members consider becoming hands on with this project. It will mean complete involvement from the beginning of planning through to the completion of the project in August, September of 2010.
We also had an impromptu visit from Liverpool Club member Allan Bull. Apart from trying, unsuccessfully I may add, to convince us that his club was the premier club in the area; he also gave a talk on RYLA, for which, in the main most of us were most attentive. He then disappeared into the night just as quickly to attend an- other engagement.
We had Shann O’Connell as our second guest speaker. Shann’s vocation in life is marketing a form of interest free finance called, ”Equity Release”, whereby a home owner can access part of the equity in their home, in return for partial sharing of future profits with the lender on eventual sale of the home. Sounds complicated, but Shann assures that for the right person at the right time, this method of accessing cash using equity in your home is quite beneficial.
Austral Bowling Club’s very own Bill Crockett also deserves our praise. His efforts raised $6000, which will go towards helping double amputee Steve Irwin continue his favourite pass time. Bill, you’re a legend and your Liverpool West Rotary Club application is waiting.
The raffle on the 8th raised $125.00 and a shortened fine session raised $58.35.
- 1st prize went to Ted Mlynarz
- 2nd to Joe Cauchi
- 3rd to Allan Hall who was sporting a shiner that even Joe Bugner would be proud of.
A special thanks to Kevin Walker who does things like putting out the flag, bell, and name tags then ensures they are all kept in pristine condition. Thanks mate; we don’t give you enough praise.
The raffle jackpot will be $50.00 on 22nd September.
Our 15 September meeting was transferred to the Liverpool Police Officer of The Year Dinner at Liverpool Catholic Club. This was the 11th year this highly successful event has been held. The award was won by Detective Senior Constable Shane Green. In an emotional acceptance speech, Shane described how he decided at a very young age that he wanted to be a policeman, simply because he wanted to protect the innocent and lock up all the bad guys. To date, his aspirations seem to be right on queue.
Two hundred and five people attended the function. Dignitaries included, DG Paul Reid and his wife Julia, Mrs Wendy Waller, Mayor of Liverpool, Acting Deputy Commissioner Frank Minelli, Assistant Commissioner Robert Waites and a host of police officers, Rotarians and leaders of social groups representing a large cross section of the local community. Our own club had a large representation as did Liverpool and Liverpool Greenway Clubs. Special thanks, again goes to the organising committee and in particular, Mrs June Young, Mr Stephen Chensee and ADG Mr John Gibbs for meticulous planning of the event. June has been at the helm since day one, eleven years ago and still contributes 100%, which effectively ensures that the high standard and success of The Police Officer of the Year Awards continues. Great work June. A special thank you also, to our own Mr Sam Capra for his Silver Sponsorship of the night.
Our chefs for Saturday’s Farmers Market BBQ on 19 September are Allan Hall, Gary Halliday & Charles Hili
Charlie.
