The festive season along with fun filled breakfast meetings and Golf Days are well and truly behind us. This was indicative by the amount of business that was discussed at last night’s meeting, which also doubled as our first club forum for the year.
Liverpool Greenway recently informed us of the subject for “The Great Debate”, which will be held at Hunt’s Hotel, Crossroads on 17th February. The subject of the debate is, “Wine is Sunlight…Is it really the fruit of the earth, of human hands, or, is it the scourge of society, the devil’s private stock?” Our club will join with Cabramatta Club in arguing that Wine is indeed “The Devil’s Drink”. Pat Murray and David Goldston will represent our club and hopefully fool everyone into believing what they obviously don’t believe. I encourage you all to attend this night as these debates usually bring out the best and worst of the sarcastic, egotistical and comical side of Rotarians.
Shann came up with a novel idea for our club theme for this years District Conference. Remember it is a Circus themed event. I will keep her suggestion under wraps for fear it may be stolen by unwitting parties. Nevertheless, I like the idea of the Top-Hat, tails and whip for the president. Someone find me a Top-Hat and tails, I already have the whip. Shann, you have free reign to follow up the theme you suggested with the club’s full backing.
I have emailed all members commitment sheets for all important upcoming events. All are listed on our website and at the conclusion of this bulletin. Please have a look and see if you can attend one or all of these.
This year’s “Circus Extravaganza” will be Max Bunter’s last as Ring Master, unless he can be convinced otherwise. Max has been a stalwart of our club since the inception of “The Circus” and his impending retirement will be our loss. In any case, our very own “Town Crier”, Peter Houghton has agreed to fill Max’s particularly large shoes. I can’t think of anyone more suited to this role than Peter, who starts his apprenticeship under Max at this year’s event. I can’t believe we are looking at a possible 14,000 kids and parents attending the Circus over four days, a testament to The Tele-Marketing campaign by our partners, Communitel, the vision of our club and the generosity of all the donor businesses which makes it all possible.
Next week is a partner’s night (6:00 for 6:30 p.m.) where our special guests will be, PDG Jennifer Scott and husband Ian, from The Rotary Foundation. We will also have the young adults who attended RYLA and the Summer Science School as well as two representatives from “World MUNA” to talk about their organisation’s vision and two representatives from Drug Arm.
Hope to see you all then.
PS: The raffle raised $50 and Fines $93.10 – The members Raffle Jackpot will be $150 on 9 February 2010
