Our club has again achieved excellent attendance to our Tuesday night dinner meeting. Tonight, over 20 members and guests listened to Vice Chairman of The Australian Jockey Club, John Cornish speak on the major development which is planned for Warwick farm Race Course. As a local boy himself, John is highly enthused at the prospect of being involved in a project that is going to benefit the million or so people currently living in the Fairfield, Liverpool, Campbelltown corridor. Over 40 million dollars has been earmarked to transform the ageing facility into a world class horse racing, training and sales facility. The project will allow for low cost membership and sponsorship opportunities for individuals and businesses alike and will help stimulate the activities of local concerns such as hotels, motels and restaurants. Following a PowerPoint presentation, John supplied our members with pamphlets detailing the project and the affordable sponsorship opportunities available to small business. It seems that our Farmers Market BBQ may reap some unexpected exposure and rewards due to this proposal.
We also had our incoming ADG for Zone 4, Veronica Necyporuk in attendance last night. Veronica displayed an enthusiasm for her new role that ensures our club and the new board will get all the support needed from district come 1st July 2010. Veronica also took the opportunity to corner Margaret Beadle, who now looks certain to double as incoming President Peter’s personal secretary. Now why didn’t someone think of that this time last year?
The Cimino brothers again hogged the limelight in the raffle. The affable brothers seem to have a mortgage on at least one of the prizes week in, week out. Reborn member Joseph, took out second prize after walking away with first last week. It has been decreed that Jock and Joe can no longer sit together at our weekly meetings. Thankfully, Shann’s persistence over the past 15 months paid off with a meat tray tonight. Assistant to John Cornish, Jill Belford walked away with the box of chocolates.
Our club sends its deepest condolences to The Houghton Family. Barbara Houghton has just recently mourned the loss off her sister. This has been further exacerbated by the loss of their son in laws father. The setbacks have not deterred Peter and Barbara from their respective duties in Rotary and Inner Wheel, a testament to their strength and character.
Next week, Brett Smyth Liverpool Salvation Army and Josh from Liverpool West Youth Service will be our special guests. We established this service in conjunction with the Salvation Army in 2006 and it has been operating successfully our local area since then.
Judging by recent form, we should get a good turnout for this night as well.
Finally, The Farmers Market BBQ this Saturday will be manned by the so called and self professed ‘Dream Team’, comprising Jim Rudling, Shann O’Connell and(Gary Halliday (for fellow dreamer, John Squilacotti who will be on his HOG in the Riverena). As has been the case since July last year, Ted Mlynarz, Bob Groat, Les Still and Remo Di Giovanni will already have the sparks flying from an early hour. These guys have done an outstanding job every Saturday for the past ten months and epitomise the character of our Liverpool West Club. John Squilacotti, Remo Di Giovanni and Richard Watts are not even current members of our club but put in just as much as if they were (as did Joe Cimino before rejoining). Can somebody please do or say something that will convince these guys to officially join our club.
