Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) is part of an international Rotary Project to educate senior high school students (years 10 to 12) on the United Nations Organisation and its vital commitment to world peace along with health, education and living standards around the world. MUNA helps students to develop public speaking and debating skills along with the study of the customs, culture and problems of the world’s nations. Delegates attend MUNA wearing the national dress of the country they represent.
MUNA will be held this year on the 22nd & 23rd of May at the University of Western Sydney at Kingswood. The teams will be representing Liberia and Brazil at the assembly.
The Rotary Club of Liverpool West will again sponsor participation this year from All Saints Girls College at Liverpool. Meeting the cost of sponsoring 2 teams of 3 Students and 1 Teacher plus a support contingent of an additional 6 students.
In the words of All Saints Girls College Teacher: Pauline Nowlan ' This is one of the most valuable co-curricular activities that students can participate in, the skills they learn here set them up for the challenge of further education, both in senior school and beyond. One of the significant challenges we face teaching girls from South-Western Sydney is the lack of general knowledge and an understanding of their relative place in the world, MUNA directly addresses this challenge. It requires of students that they develop independent research skills and develop an appreciation of how context impacts on experience and that they learn to put forward a cogent argument, including arguments that they personally disagree with. Past students have provided feedback on the way in which the experience has changed their expectations about both study and their career preferences ... not many of the co-curricular experiences that students are exposed to have that kind of impact.
