The Rotary Club of Liverpool West has been involved with Miller College from Inception of the College. Our 1980/81 Board ( President John Leckey, Secretary Greg Peel, Treasurer Bill Keech and Directors; Tony Everett, John Mula, George Kristen and Peter Houghton), commissioned the Inaugural Rotary Club Presentation Night of Awards to Outstanding Miller Students in 1981.
Only one Student from each Faculty may be chosen by their teachers in any one year. Teachers consider Academic results, the personal contributions made by the student to the classroom learning environment and the initiatives of the student to further advance their own education and standing in the community. There is no obligation of a teacher to choose an outstanding student, where they believe no student was particularly outstanding, meaning all of the students chosen are deserving of the award.
The Rotary Club provides an expert panel to interview awardees. Each of the awardees is than provided with dinner at the presentation night for themselves and a guest, an awards plaque and a reward cheque of $250.00. An overall winner will be revealed tonight and receive an additional $250.00 as well as have his name added to the Miller College Honours roll displayed on now 2 boards prominently at the College.
Certificates are then presented by Rotarians at the individual faculty College Award nights.
This is the 30th anniversary year of these awards and is suitably celebrated with attendance almost 80 persons (from the Club, College – both faculty and students and their guests together with family and friends).
This event is made possible because of outstanding support and participation of many people, namely students worthy of the award, teachers that care to see worthy students are recognised and the support of many that care to organise and support the event. As a Rotary Club we remain most proud of the association.
We welcome and thank all for their continued support and their efforts with special acknowledgement to Inga Milenkovic, Miller College Administrative Assistant and Vocational Services Director: PP Peter Houghton, who has overseen this year’s organisation and fittingly brings you the 30th year of this event, after playing an instrumental part to introduce the program 30 years ago.
