Last night our club hosted the very successful and well attended Miller TAFE Awards Presentation. These particular evenings seem to be getting bigger and better every year, so much so that Liverpool Catholic Club moved the event to one of the larger function rooms to cater for the 66 people whom were in attendance.
Our club’s association with Miller TAFE is well documented and dates back some thirty years. Who would have thought that when Liverpool West’s John Leckey, Greg Peel, Bill Keech, Tony Everett, John Mula, George Kristen and Peter Houghton sat down with TAFE administrators in 1981 to work out an awards scheme our club could administer and call our own, that it would still hold such significance so many years later? The vision of these men now sees our club firmly entrenched as a supporter of one of the districts leading teaching faculties.
One student from each faculty was chosen by a teacher to receive an award. This decision was based on academic results, personal contributions made by the student to the classroom learning environment and the initiatives of the student to further advance their own education and standing in the community. The following students were deemed worthy of receiving an awards plaque, certificate and a cheque for $250 from our club.
Dianne McGarrity for Business Adninistration.
Mitchel Chilton for Carpentry and Joinery.
Christina Scarabello for Child Studies.
Daniel Ragusi for Electrical.
Iain Hood for Stonemasonry.
Rachel Blows for Plumbing.
Wayne Schembri for Sheet Metal.
Charlie Tran for Information Technology.
From the above recipients, a committee comprising of Vocational Services Director Peter Houghton and other club members had the unenviable task of choosing one of these as the overall winner. They say there was a struck match in it, but eventually they chose Iain Hood from the Stonemasonry faculty as their choice. Lain received a further cheque for $250 and also gets his name added to The Miller College Honour Roll displayed prominently at the college.
Congratulations to Iain and all the other awardees. Well done.
In addition, I had the pleasure of re-inducting Joe Cimino back into our Club, welcome back Joe.
Next week, Jane Thompson from Drug Arm will be our special guest. We will also be handing over a sizeable cheque of almost $55,000 so I will most certainly see you all on the night.
