Rotarians

A lot has happened since the last report:

·        We have had many interesting presentations (our exchange student, finally Model UN, and Fairfield High School who gave us money for a shelter box and Karitane who helped to open some eyes to Child Protection issues in our own back yard. Our thanks to all.

·        We have also had the "best day ever" at the Warwick Farm Trackside Farmers Market"

·        I've been to the first president’s meeting of the year - no photos. Key issues are:

o       The district needs more members or it will cease to be a district

o       The child protection laws have changed and we need to do new forms including forms for family members over 18 of exchange student host families

o       Rotaries insurance policy is changing ad may save us some money on our market stall

·        Allan Hall is off on a Variety Bash - wish him well.

·        We had a welcome BBQ for our exchange student Henni Niemi. A good time was had by all. Some of the guests went away thinking hosting an exchange student would be a good thing.

·        Our outbound exchange student is alive and well with is latest host family (absolute water frontage from the bedroom window onto Helsinki Harbour). See http://beadle.tumblr.com/ for Adrian’s BLOG with lots more pictures and even videos.

·        Spring has arrived – as all allergy sufferers will know

·        Our District Governor Marilyn Mercer will be visiting on Tuesday 31 August 2010 and our Vietnamese satellite club has transferred their Tuesday lunch meeting to Tuesday dinner to meet the DG. New members Thuan NGUYEN, Thang DUC, Dr Hien TRAN and Bach Dang VO will be inducted on the night.

·        We will be supporting Jason Borg, with $1000 to attend National Youth Science Week, in Pretoria South Africa. Jason to provide assistance at Club’s fundraising activities when available, and will attend club meeting after his return to provide a presentation of his experiences at the event.

·        The Business Networking Night scheduled for 14th September has been turned into an Exchange Student presentation night with students from Belgium, Switzerland and Germany presenting. We had planned to partner with the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce for the networking night. It turned out that to work with them we would have also needed to partner with Wetherill Park club and hold the event in the day. Undefeated the board will regroup, revise our plans and come up with an event later in the year. Any volunteers for a sub-committee to work on the business networking night as a new member initiative are very welcome.

·        There have been copious updates to the district directory released two weeks ago. When the flow of updates stops I will put them all into a message and post on our web site.

·        Pride of Workmanship is on again on Tuesday 16th November. Please look for people to nominate who take pride in what they do. A fun presentation night is sure to result. Nomination form attached.

·        Our golf day is on Wednesday 20th October at Camden Lakeside Country Club. Contact Ted Mlynarz (0408 979 304)  or Geoff Gibbs (0413 740 840) for details (entry form here), Golf Day proceeds will be split evenly between

o       St Vincent de Paul Liverpool Night Patrol

o       OZ Harvest

o       Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service

·        Recognition Of. Youth Awards (ROYA) will be held at Club Marconi on Thursday 26th August. Our club meeting has been transferred to Club Marconi – numbers are low so pleas attend if you can.

The Sky is Falling

Finally Mars makes its closest approach to Earth in our lifetimes on 27th August. Please go out and have a look up to see two moons in the sky. If you miss it you have to wait until 2287 to see it again. See http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/mars_history_030826.html for details
