Rayan Saleh Moussa has been awarded the PhD scholarship for the study of "THE ROLE OF METALS FOR THE TREATMENT OF CANCER AND DEVELOPMENT OF NOVEL ANTI-TUMOUR AGENTS FOR THE TREATMENT OF MELANOMA".

Rayan will be supervised by in these studies by Professor Des, Richardson at the University of Sydney.

The aim of the research project is to examine the development of novel drugs for the treatment of melanoma. This work will be complemented by studies examining how these agents work at the cellular and molecular level to inhibit the growth of malignant melanoma cells.

The work will build on the breakthrough studies in the laboratory of Prof. Richardson published in high impact scientific journals into using a class iron chelators that overcome resistance to other chemical therapies. This ongoing research has been partially funded by the Club in cunjunction with Australian Rotary Health.

The scholarship is for 3 years with and option to extend for a further 6 months and is worth in excess of $33,000 per year. The scholarship is jointly funded by Rotary Club of Liverpool West Inc., Australian Rotary Health and the Australian Government.

In the not to distant future Rayan will be a guest speaker at one of our club meetings.
