Rayan will be supervised in his studies by Professor Des Richardson at the University of Sydney
The aim of the research project is to examine the development of novel drugs for the treatment of melanoma. This work will be complemented by studies examining how these agents work at the cellular and molecular level to inhibit the growth of malignant melanoma cells.
The work will build on the breakthrough studies in the laboratory of Prof. Richardson published in high impact scientific journals into using a class iron chelators that overcome resistance to other chemical therapies. This ongoing research has been partially funded by the Club in conjunction with Australian Rotary Health.
Dr Zaklina Kovacevic B.Med.Sc. (Hon I), Ph.D., Post-Doctoral Researcher, Department of Pathology, is a co-supervisor of Rayan and will also provide a short complimenting presentation. Guests then include: Prof Des Richardson and Kelly Martinez, Research Officer from Australian Rotary Health, whom will present a plaque to Rayan on this night.
Australian Rotary Health Concept:Australian Rotary Health is Australia's largest non-government funding body of mental illness research. They also fund research in other health related areas.
The genesis of Australian Rotary Health in 1981 was the mystery of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The Late Ian Scott, from the Rotary Club of Mornington, established the Fund to support research into SIDS at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. As the Fund grew so did the vision of medical research possibilities. Supported by Rotarians Australian wide, Australian Rotary Health was soon in a position to sponsor health research in areas that did not readily attract funding.
Australian Rotary Health has a broad vision of health.
Here are just a few of the programs run by Australian Rotary Health Research
·         Mental Health Awareness
·         Indigenous Health Scholarship
·         Road Transport Survey
·         Rural Medical Scholarships
