The coldest night of the year did not deter the new president of Liverpool Greenway from attending last night’s meeting where she detailed plans for her club’s year ahead. Mrs June Young is already renowned for her organisational abilities in putting together such successful functions as The Police Officer of the Year Awards and The annual Combined Services Dinner. June is now focussing on staging The Christmas in July spectacular which will again involve the input of all three Liverpool Rotary clubs. The focus for her year as president is to bring the three Liverpool clubs closer together by means of holding

We had another very good roll up to tonight’s meeting. I counted 26 people in attendance. These included our special guest speaker, the inspirational Colin Taylor; Pastor Colin Davidson of The Inspire Church and Poppy and Duncan, fresh from their RYPEN Camp (with their family members).

Our speaker for the night, Colin Taylor, knows a thing or two about automobiles. His life basically revolved around them, especially Chevrolet cars, a passion he shared with long time friend

Numbers for last night’s meeting were bolstered to twenty three with the return of myself and other Vietnam Vision volunteers; Joe Cauchi, Ted Mlynarz and Jimmy Leahy. Bob Groat was unable to attend as the stomach bug he procured some eight days ago in Saigon is still preventing him from functioning on all cylinders. Many of our wives were also in attendance which made our special guest, Professor Des Richardson feel right at home. Des is no stranger to our club. Besides being a local to the area, he has visited many times previously whilst also being the recipient of research funds provided by our club.

Professor Richardson’s major contributions to cancer research are focused on understanding the role of iron in cancer cell proliferation and the development of novel anti-tumour agents known as iron chelators. Indeed, these studies have resulted in highly promising and potent anti-cancer drugs

We had a well attended meeting last night, particularly as we currently have 6 of our Members imbedded in the jungles of Vietnam assisting the Vietnam Vision Team with the planned 400 operations to restore the sight of needy patients, I should qualify the previous statement by clarifying that our members are helping logistically, not surgically.

Our guest speaker was Daniel Doherty from MerlinFX who

Our guest last night was Miss Kikki Tagaroulias of The Karri Aboriginal Resources Centre in Liverpool. This was the first presentation Kikki has made on behalf of the centre and we were privileged to witness it. Not a bad job either for a first timer. KARRI was established in 1999 and is a dynamic Indigenous community organisation based in Liverpool. They provide Aboriginal Child Protection Services and Community Capacity Building Programs to the Indigenous community of South-West Sydney. They develop and implement best practices in all aspects of their management and service provision and are recognised as the largest Aboriginal children’s service in NSW. Their Vision: The Indigenous community of South West Sydney will become self sufficient

Last night, I had the pleasure of performing a number of very satisfying duties on behalf of our club. As with all other meetings this year, most our members were fittingly on hand to share the experience.

The culmination of our main fund raising effort saw the handing over of a rather substantial cheque to Drug Arm. National Fund Raising Manager, Jane Thompson and Management Team Member, Naomi Talamaivao were on hand to receive a cheque for over $54,000 from our club which will help administer their Street Outreach Service over the coming year. Drug Arm receives no government funding; therefore allowing a partnership to flourish with our club that has become mutually beneficial. The bottom line is that our club gets to stage a yearly Circus Extravaganza for children and Drug Arm receives much needed operating funds. To date, this partnership has seen in excess of $500,000 raised for Drug Arm and more than 100,000 children pass through the turnstiles of The Circus. Not a bad result in just eight short years.

Last night our club hosted the very successful and well attended Miller TAFE Awards Presentation. These particular evenings seem to be getting bigger and better every year, so much so that Liverpool Catholic Club moved the event to one of the larger function rooms to cater for the 66 people whom were in attendance.

Our club’s association with Miller TAFE is well documented and dates back some thirty years. Who would have thought that when Liverpool West’s John Leckey, Greg Peel, Bill Keech, Tony Everett, John Mula, George Kristen and Peter Houghton sat down with TAFE administrators in 1981 to work out an awards scheme our club could administer and call our own, that it would still hold such significance so many years later? The vision of these men now sees our club firmly entrenched as a supporter of one of the districts leading teaching faculties.

Our club has again achieved excellent attendance to our Tuesday night dinner meeting. Tonight, over 20 members and guests listened to Vice Chairman of The Australian Jockey Club, John Cornish speak on the major development which is planned for Warwick farm Race Course. As a local boy himself, John is highly enthused at the prospect of being involved in a project that is going to benefit the million or so people currently living in the Fairfield, Liverpool, Campbelltown corridor. Last night we enjoyed the company of past District Governor Barry Thompson, from the Rotary Club of Padstow. Barry gave our club some food for thought when he discussed Rotary’s new initiative on Club leadership and administration. Although the new concept is not compulsory, yet, the ideals certainly present a case for change that may or may not be adopted in the near future. Barry highlighted the effects

Last night, over sixty members, friends and guests representing the five zone clubs (Liverpool, Liverpool West, Liverpool Greenway, Cabramatta & Wetherill Park) attended the inbound Canadian Group Study Exchange presentation at Liverpool Catholic Club.

From the outset, it was obvious that our Canadian guests were thoroughly enjoying their time here. They mingled freely with guests while displaying their gregarious nature, a point that had not gone unnoticed by those who had already met, or in some cases hosted the weary travellers.

This evening, the much anticipated ‘Great Debate’ was held at Hunts Hotel Crossroads. The eight protagonists representing the four clubs, unapologetically and unashamedly lied, cheated, defamed and did everything within their power bar commit an atrocity to convince the judge that they had the better of the argument. In the end it was the combined team of Liverpool and Liverpool Greenway who took home the bacon, and the wine. Liverpool Greenway President, Wayne Schembri mounted what could only be called subversive tactics in his efforts to debunk the Liverpool West and Cabramatta teams argument from the relative safety of his podium. In the end it was all in fun and Wayne and his club should be congratulated for making it the fun evening everyone expected. Thanks to our team which comprised, Pat Murray, David Goldston, David Butterfield and Margaret Favelle. You did us proud but maybe next year we can employ some under handed tactics of our own.

We had a number of guests attend our last meeting which made for a very entertaining and informative evening. One of these was PDG, Mrs Jennifer Scott, an eloquent speaker who spoke about The Rotary Foundation’s efforts in advancing world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. Our club handed a cheque in the amount of $3000, which Jennifer gratefully accepted and assured would go towards advancing the principles’ of The Foundation.
