In 1985/86 Club Records tells us current Member Joe Cimino presented Certificates to 32 Schools in the Local Area. The records don't suggest when the awards were started however they are still well and alive today. New members George Germanos and John Pillay consider same to be a very worthwhile project as do many of the schools including Cartwright Public who also present a Perpetual Trophy and a plaque for this very award.

So now school is over and all the exchange students from Finland gathered together to go on Eurotour!
Our Eurotour consisted of all of us students on buses (and occasionally boats) driving around Europe for 18 days. We went from Finland to Sweden by boat. This was one of the big cruise ships like nothing I'd experienced before and they had lots of fun things to do while we were floating over to Sweden. After we got off we then drove through Sweden to get to another boat that would take us to

So this month Rotary took us to Russia, we visited the grand city of St. Petersburg. It is an enormous city although not that old it still has many beautiful palaces and a fortress which are great to look at. We visited sites like the Hermitage, several churches, Peter the Greats chamber of Curiosities. We also saw a Russian ballet and some incredibly talented Cossack Dancers. There was lots of fun with the other exchange students on the busses and in the hotel as well as looking at all of the amazing sights. I took over a thousand photos and now that Eurotour is upon us I fear my camera might run out of memory

This month was very good and a lot of fun. There was Easter for starters where we got to eat a lot of lamb, apparently more than half of all the lamb eaten in Finland is during Easter. I got to experience the Lutheran Church where there was a wonderful organist playing all sorts of music. It was a bit different from the Roman Catholic Church I have grown up in but I am quite sure that the content was fairly similar. We visited some family friends in Porvoo which is a lovely old town by a river. It is one of the really old towns in Finland although it has burned down a few times but it is still really beautiful.

This month had lots of things happening; it seems to be a trend.

The biggest/most exciting thing was going to Sweden. I took a plane with my host family to Gothenburg for the synchronised skating world finals. Our team, “Team Fintastic” won by a fair amount, which was wonderful. The girls all celebrated and screamed their lungs out. We were there for two days and in the daytime I got to look around the city and see some sights including some very old churches and a military aircraft museum in a retired secret underground hangar. That was pretty cool. There was also an exhibition on Bollywood

On Friday the 22nd of January I flew out of Sydney at around 5pm with a large group of exchange students. We went from Sydney to Singapore and then to Heathrow where we split up. This long journey was in Qantas’s brand new Airbus A380. The seats were comfortable, although there was not much legroom and there was plenty of in-flight entertainment. From Heathrow we boarded a Finnair flight to Finland
