ShelterBox was founded in 2000 by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in the small town of Helston, Cornwall UK.
Now, 25 years later, ShelterBox has grown into an independent international disaster relief organisation that provides emergency shelter, tools and other essentials to people after disaster and have supported over 3 million people in around 100 countries.
Our Club has been supporting Shelterbox since its inception. while they still use the original Shelterbox, these days most relief is now palletised for ease of shipping and handling. Aid can also be better targetted and tailored to an areas needs.
Two of the main type of aid provided are:
SHELTER KITS - the contents of the kit are customised to meet the individual needs of each community helped. Inside a shelter kit can be a range of simple and rigorously tested tools to repair a home, start a new life and find a way out of the rubble.
ITEMS PACKED IN A SHELTER KIT COULD INCLUDE:
Tarpaulin: sheets of heavy-duty tarp can be used to create walls and roofs
Rope(s): this universal essential can make shelters secure and stable
Hoe(s): this tool can prepare the ground and later be used for farming
Tie wire: fix tarpaulins or bamboo structures with 500g of wire
Tin snips: the snips can be used to cut tie wire or tin roofing plates
Handsaw: the saw will enable people to use timber or bamboo if it’s available
Roofing nails: we include 500g worth of nails, with washers to seal out the rain
Shovel: this can prepare foundations for a shelter or dig drainage ditches
Nails: 1kg of timber nails will also secure any repairs
Claw hammer: another universal tool for nailing together a home
Curved needle: to stitch tarpaulins
Tape measure: to measure distance for any projects or tasks
They provide training to help families understand how to use their new equipment.
TENTS - Designed for protection
1. Wind
ShelterBox tents are tested in winds up to 100kmh where, even without guy ropes, they remain sturdy.
2. Rain
The high spec, waterproof outer keeps the interior dry, even in driving rains.
3. Stress
Flexible tent poles reduce damage from impact and are designed to be pitched and taken down again several times to allow families to be flexible with where they settle.
4. Heat
A reflective exterior shields from UV light, while ventilation windows allow the breeze to roll in.
5. Cold
When paired with the winterised tent liner, they can help protect against the freezing cold.
Some of the areas where help has been provided include:
Ukraine
They responded to the Ukraine crisis, helping more than 130,000 people affected by the war in Ukraine. Theysupported people displaced within Ukraine, as well as refugees who crossed the border into Moldova.
A great deal of our attention was on supporting people through the bitter winter months, by reaching people with essential items to help them survive.
People are living in damaged homes without heating or lighting. That’s why we provided thermal clothing, solar lights, water carriers and stoves and provided emergency shelter repair kits. These helped people fix damaged roofs, seal windows and doors, keep the heat in and make homes watertight.
Fiji
ShelterBox has worked in Fiji supporting people there without shelter. They responded to support people with emergency shelter after Cyclone Winston in 2016 and looked into the needs of people impacted by Cyclone Yasa in 2020.
What was the effect of cyclone Yasa?
The devastating cyclone unleashed powerful winds, torrential rain and flooding.
Power cuts were reported in the capital, Suva, and some areas were cut off by floodwaters.
In Fiji, many homes are made from wood or corrugated iron. These materials make them extremely vulnerable during storms like Yasa. The United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned that even well-built houses could face severe damage.
The country was braced for severe disruption and widespread damage.
Vanuatu
On April 6 2020, Cyclone Harold made landfall in Vanuatu as a Category 5 cyclone, bringing devastation to communities in the north.
It was the strongest cyclone to hit the islands since Cyclone Pam in 2015. Harold destroyed thousands of houses, damaged food crops, and caused widespread power outages. Some communities were completely flattened by the cyclone, with electricity posts broken in two and roofs torn off by the powerful cyclonic wind.
Communities had to use what little building material they could salvage to create storage for their remaining possessions. These structures were too small to use as shelter, so many people had to sleep out in the open.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, access to the country was extremely difficult.
As they weren’t able to send a response team, they partnered with CARE Vanuatu to get much-needed aid to the most vulnerable families.
Families received tarpaulins and rope, solar lights and kitchen sets. The tools and fixings contained in the shelter kits were considered as community tools, which is a usual practice in Vanuatu.
We will again be supporting them
Membership fees (as invoiced) can now be paid by cash or card at meetings or deposited to the Clubs account
We will be back in Martin Place in June distributing meals, drinks and clothing to the homeless of our City. If you are able to assist in any way contact President John Pillay.
Donations of food and good quality clean clothing would also be appreciated.
