Meeting 20 October 2020
Apologies Geoff Gibbs and Rinna Ly
Guest Speaker – Mary Howard from Blaze Aid
Mary is currently the Co-Ordinator of the Blaze Aid Camp at Moruya which has been in operation since February 2020 and based at the Moruya Show Ground. Frans Buskermolen introduced Mary to the meeting and she gave a presentation of the work that has been done throughout Australia since Blaze Aid was established in 2009 after the Black Saturday Bushfires that brought an urgent need for fences to be rebuilt and Communities restored.
Since then thousands of long- and short-term Blaze Aid volunteers have come to help rebuild fences for the bush fire survivors. Volunteers have come from all parts of Australia, as well as New Zealand, Switzerland, England, Afghanistan, Canada, Germany, Austria, America and France. In addition, they have helped to remove hundreds of kilometres of damaged fencing, removed fallen trees from fence-lines, helped with gardening projects, built the odd chook shed or two – even repainted a Pub.
BlazeAid operates from camps established in the area of need, there are currently 13 camps in NSW, 5 in Victoria and 2 in South Australia
Not only have they been active after the devastation of Bushfires they have assisted after Floods, Cyclones.
After questions, Jim Leahy thanked Mary on behalf of the Club and Members pledged donations in excess of $2,000 to assist Blaze Aid.
After Mary, who had driven up from Moruya to make this presentation, left we proceeded with our Meeting.
President Charles Hili advised that at the last Club Board meeting it was decided that a Membership Director would not be appointed but a series of Nights would be set aside where Members are asked to invite friends and colleagues to come and get to know the Rotary Club of Liverpool West. It looks like being a great night with indications that we will have around 50 people in attendance.
