Meeting  11 February 2020

We had an enjoyable night as we welcomed a large Group of visitors from the Truc Lam Zen Centre to our meeting. President Sam Capra welcomed the group expressing the Club’s appreciation for all the effort they had put into running their Vegetarian Food Stall at the Tet Festival and raising in excess of $25,000 which will be shared between Drought Appeal and Rotary’s Bushfire Appeal.
The meeting was addressed by Hidetoshi Tai and Luong Ngo from the Centre on the reasons behind their decision to assist the Club and People Suffering from the effects of the drought and bushfires. Apart from compassion they saw an opportunity to give back to Australia for the opportunities they had been given by Australia.
President Sam Capra presented a certificate of appreciation to the Centre in recognition of their efforts.

After some socialising and photo opportunities the Group left and President Sam started the more formal part of the meeting welcoming potential new member Sonny Hoang and noting apologies from Peter Beadle, Alvan Freeman, Shiva Nandan, Geoff Gibbs Rinna Ly and John Pillay.

President Sam advised that he is in contact with Youth Off the Streets in relation to our proposed fundraising for their Outreach Service. He also raised attendance at District Conference, at this stage we have 3 members registered to attend.

We discussed and confirmed that the Club would share the cost of equipping Turbans 4 Australia’s Food Van with a generator. Steps are underway to procure this.

We received and approved a request from Liverpool Hospital Brian Injury Rehabilitation Unit to assist a patient who was involved in a motor cycle accident who is currently under financial hardship and needs to purchase special shoulder orthosis to assist in his pain management. Community Service Director Shiva Nandan will discuss this matter further with the hospital and arrange for the purchase.

We were also advised by Shiva that the PC’s and Laptops were delivered to Trangie Central School on 6th February 2020.

Chief Superintendent Adam Whyte has invited Club Members to visit Liverpool City Police Command for a Vocational visit and tour of the facilities. We are looking for a suitable night for this to be scheduled.

We have received a new model constitution from District 9675 to be adopted by the Club, which once reviewed and amended where necessary will be circulated to members for consideration and adoption at a meeting.

Drought Relief Narromine District
It looks like a similar number will travel to Narromine and it has been recommended that accommodation be at the Caravan Park where we stayed in December 2019. At this stage planning is in the early stages and subject to discussions with Narromine Rotary Club but at this stage it looks like this: -

Thursday, 2 April 2020 – Travel to Narromine;
Friday, 3 April 2020 – School visits to distribute Easter Eggs and make other presentations;
Saturday, 4 April 2020 – Possible Farm Visits; then
Sunday, 5 April 2020 – Return to Liverpool.

As well as our Club members of the Rotary Club of Kincumber have been invited to join us as they have supported our appeal.

Once the dust has settled and fund have been allocated we will have a better idea of what we can achieve but at this stage we are looking at gifts for K-6 and preschool students (Easter Eggs), additional support for school hardship funds, continuing with the Drought Relief Voucher Program and looking for other ideas.

Our Members only raffle jackpot will be $50 on
 18 February 2020 and we have new and exiting wines just waiting to be won – so bring your money with you

On 10 March 2020 Noor Jarbou will be guest speaker. Noor is the recipient of an Australian Rotary Health Research Scholarship co-funded by our Club.

She will provide an update into her research Peri-Natal Infant Mental Health  Research

‘The effects of treated and untreated depression during pregnancy on offspring behaviour and brain development ‘
